Diacerein

Common use

Diacerein is used to treat joint conditions like osteoarthritis, which causes swelling and pain in the joints. It is mainly used to manage symptoms in the knee and hip joints and belongs to a group of drugs called anthraquinones. Often prescribed for long-term use, it helps reduce pain, stiffness, and difficulty in movement caused by osteoarthritis.

Dosage and direction

Diacerein is primarily available in the form of oral capsules. Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. Do not chew or crush it. Always take this medicine during or after meals. Do not exceed the dosage recommended by your doctor. Remember to continue taking this medicine for the duration prescribed by your doctor.

Precautions

Individuals with liver and kidney diseases should exercise caution while using Diacerein as it might increase the risk of adverse effects. Elderly patients and individuals with inflammatory bowel diseases should also use this medication carefully.

Contraindications

Diacerein is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to diacerein or any components of the formulation. It should be avoided in individuals with severe liver or kidney disease.
Diacerein is not recommended for use during pregnancy or lactation.

Possible side effect

Side effects of Diacerein: Diarrhea; Abdominal pain; Soft stools; Urine discoloration; Skin rash; Liver function abnormalities: Changes in the way your liver works, which may be detected through blood tests.

Drug interaction

Diacerein may interact with diuretics (such as furosemide and hydrochlorothiazide). It should be used cautiously with cardiac glycosides (like digoxin and digitoxin).

Missed dose

If you miss a dose of Diacerein, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double up on doses to make up for a missed one.

Overdose

Overdosing on Diacerein can cause an increase in the severity of side effects, particularly gastrointestinal disturbances. If you suspect an overdose, contact your doctor immediately.

Storage

Store Diacerein at a cool room temperature. Keep it in a dry place, safe from light and moisture. Ensure this medication is kept out of the reach of children. Always check the expiry date on the packet before taking Diacerein.
